A modern brand refresh for Alternative Press magazine that recalls its DIY roots. Alternative Press (AP) is a music publication founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1985, that has grown to be an influential source of alternative music news, style trends, and culture both in print and online. The existing AP brand feels very much like it belongs in the scene culture of the mid '00s, and I wanted to revamp it to be more suited for 2017. Cleaner, more consistent use of type and a simplified color palette allow for a better balance with the busy, grungy music photography. Subtle grunge textures and the new "cut" lettermark recall AP's start as a DIY punk rock zine back in the '80s. The brand refresh results in a publication that has more modern style yet can still embody the edgier aesthetic desired by its readers.
